From Fez to contemporary architecture

Zellige is far more than a surface finish. It is a visual language of geometry, proportion, and light. For over nine centuries, Moroccan master artisans have refined this language by hand, transmitting it through rigorous apprenticeship and cultural continuity.

Its roots trace back to medieval Fez, where mosques and madrasas established zellige as a core element of architectural identity. In these spaces, every motif serves a calibrated balance between ornament and structure.

Heritage projects such as the Great Mosque of Tinghir show how traditional zellige remains architecturally relevant today.

Sacred geometry and modular precision

Zellige compositions emerge from modular grids, star polygons, and interlocking forms. The result feels poetic, yet the method is deeply mathematical. Each piece is hand-cut at a precise angle so the final composition reads as fluid, balanced, and intentional.

Core geometric families

  • Diamonds and rectangles for structural rhythm
  • 5, 6, 8, and 12-point stars for central composition
  • Transitional pieces to connect major motifs
  • Hand-cut modules assembled with millimetric tolerance

A living heritage, not a frozen past

Zellige evolved from royal courts to riads, and today into hospitality, civic architecture, and private residences of distinction. Context has changed; the artisanal discipline has not: material selection, glazing, firing, and hand cutting remain essential.

TRAVTAZI extends this lineage by pairing heritage craftsmanship with contemporary project standards: reliable execution, technical coordination, and lasting performance.
